Abstract

This study explores the motives and impacts of using ChatGPT as a learning resource among English Education students at Muhammadiyah University of West Sumatera. The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly transformed learning practices, with ChatGPT commonly used to complete assignments and support English language learning. This research identifies both intrinsic and extrinsic motives and examines the resulting academic impacts. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, 13 students were purposively selected to participate in semi-structured interviews, supported by observation and documentation. Data were validated through triangulation and member checking, and were analyzed thematically. The findings reveal that intrinsic motives stem from students’ personal interests and initiatives, such as generating ideas, creating lesson plans, developing debate scripts, improving academic writing, and understanding complex concepts. Extrinsic motives are driven by external factors such as tight deadlines, grade expectations, and peer influence. In some cases, extrinsic motivation evolved into internal motivation as students recognized the benefits of using ChatGPT. Positive impacts include increased task efficiency, improved academic performance, and greater learning engagement. However, negative impacts include reduced critical thinking, dependency, and limited peer interaction. The study concludes that ChatGPT can be an effective learning aid when used wisely and critically.
