Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of using Instagram in improving students’ reading comprehension of descriptive texts. The research employed a quantitative method with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The sample consisted of 35 students from class XI F.6 at SMAN 2 Padang Panjang, selected through purposive sampling based on preliminary observations indicating low reading ability. The research instrument was a 20-item multiple-choice test measuring students’ literal comprehension. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the non-parametric Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test due to the non- normal data distribution. The results showed a significant improvement in the students’ mean scores from 65.00 in the pre-test to 93.14 in the post-test. The Wilcoxon test yielded a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between pre- and post-test results. These findings demonstrate that the use of Instagram can enhance students’ motivation and engagement, making reading activities more interactive, relevant, and enjoyable. Technology-based learning media closely related to students’ daily lives proved effective in developing descriptive text reading comprehension.
