Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine how well SGD affected students' speaking abilities. Pre-testing, treatment, and post-testing are the three phases of the learning process in this one-group, pre-experimental study methodology. 15 students from class X at MA KM Padangpanjang during the academic year 2023–2024 made up the sample for this study. The pre-test and post-test, which evaluated students' speaking abilities, were the instruments utilized to gather data.Grammar, pronunciation, and fluency were the three indicators used to define the success criteria. The result of this research showed that the use of small group discussion in teaching speaking improved the students speaking competence well. It could be seen on the students mean score for each test that showed the post-test got higher after doing treatment. by using small group discussion than pre-test before doing treatment by using small group discussion, that is 67 for post-test and 38 for pre-test. And it can be seen from the result of the hypothesis where t-count > 1-table (16.11>2,145). The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted while the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Therefore, it could be concluded that there is some improvemens of students' speaking competence at the first year of MA KM Padangpanjang
