Abstract

The research analyzed the student’s ability in writing recount text. In this research, researcher used descriptive qualitative research. The researcher used writing test as the instrument. The sample of this research was the second grade students in MTS Bai’aturridhwan Bukittinggi. The result of this research shows that the mean score of the students’ writing test is 62.76, it means that the students’ writing ability is on average level. There are five components of writing, they are content, grammar, vocabulary, organization, and mechanic. Based on the data analysis from the writing test, the students faced difficulties in three writing components, including organization, grammar, and mechanic. The organization component appeared as poor category, and then grammar appeared as average category. Finally, mechanic appeared as average category. Based on the result of the research, students’ difficulties in writing recount text was organization, it was difficult for students to make generic structures correctly when writing recounts, namely orientation, event, and reorientation. For language features, lack of grammar mastery so the students felt difficult to arrange correct sentences and write correct spelling words. It can be concluded that students have not deep understanding and still have a lot of error in writing recount text.
